About GYE

GYE Film is an independent production company creating films about connection, belonging, and the worlds between us.

GYE takes its name from gye (契), a traditional Korean community-based system of mutual aid in which people come together, contribute what they can, and collectively create something larger than themselves.

That spirit defines how we approach filmmaking.

The sound gye also appears throughout the Korean language — in words such as 관계 (relationship), 세계 (world), and 계시 (revelation). Different characters, different meanings, yet for us, they evoke a shared idea: the things that bind us to one another, to a place, and to the worlds around us.

For us, this becomes a metaphor for cinema.

We are drawn to stories of those who exist outside familiar circles, those who come from elsewhere, and those who feel like they belong to another world.

We believe these stories can create connections where none existed before: between people and people, people and places, and people and worlds.

GYE Film begins with documentary and independent cinema, with an ambition to build a body of work that crosses cultures, borders, mediums, and perspectives.

We make films that connect people to the world, and people to one another.
